One year ago today, October 26, 2018, I released a three-song album called Sea of Self with no fanfare. It’s a collection of three instrumental ambient tracks, each clocking at exactly ten minutes, and each exploring a unique theme: honesty, guilt, hope.
Sea of Self is my most personal and introspective work, which is likely why I didn’t make any kind of fuss about it when I finally shared it with others. I had actually completed the music in March 2018 but wasn’t ready to pull back the curtain at that time. I wanted to include visuals for the entire thirty minutes of music, so I took my time creating a full length video for each piece that are available to stream on the album’s page on this archive.
It’s not important for me to disclose the literal meanings behind the music, but I did write a few sentences that represent what each piece means to me. I hope you find some meaning for yourself in these sounds and images.
Honesty
A revelation of truth feeds a storm with hurricane strength gusts that slowly pushes across the sea of the self. Each emotion manifests in increasingly intense waves that crash one after the next onto a shore that had been peaceful for decades.
Guilt
Self inflicted noise distorts each thought that rises with clarity from the dark depths of the sea of the self. Each moment of progress drowns under forty-five layers of feared disappointment, while the next moment attempts to emerge to the surface.
Hope
Aspirations that once floated aimlessly on the surface now move with intention as the intensity of the storm dissipates. The swell of each wave that passes through the calming sea of the self can now be navigated with confidence.
